What form of protection would you use to protect newly installed floors or existing ones when building?

Repainting is serious business and avoiding spills and splatters over beautiful floor surfaces must be made a first priority. Wiping spills immediately is not the solution especially when harsh building chemicals and solvent products get in contact. Even more deadly when you need to protect brand new floor coverings during a build or during renovation works. Vasts numbers of trade workmen working simultaneously can give rise to accidental dropping of tools and spillages that can cause instant surfaces damage. We say… PROTECT your existing or newly installed natural stone tiles, engineered or reconstituted stone surfaces, finished timber floors and carpets. Leaving surfaces unprotected is like waiting for a disaster to happen. Scratches, stains, etch marks, chipped tiles, etc.. are some of the damages you will end up with.

Covering your floors may now seem like a brilliant idea.. But what will you use? A wide range of floor covering are being sold in the market and some you can obtain for free. But what you really need is an all encompassing temporary floor protection system that will keep your best assets safe when building, renovating or undergoing repainting works. The protection product used most importantly must give you the peace of mind during the stressful times of reworking your homes.

Traditional Floor Protection Options

Plastic Sheets

Plastic sheets are readily available. They can be used to cover floors, furniture and almost everything else. The good thing about plastic sheets is that you can see through them and they are impervious to absorption. However, they do not provide a safe working environment as they can be slippery and potentially a trip hazard. They easily tear and will allow liquids, soil and grit through them.

Drop Sheets

Canvases are used to protect floors from liquid spillage, falling trade tools, dust and other debris. There are no slip issues like with plastic sheets and can manage heavy flow of foot traffic. However, this cloth type material will absorb liquids at some point causing a major protection failure. Another huge issue with drop sheets is that tradesmen constantly keeps moving them around leaving areas unprotected and vulnerable.

Old Newspapers

A free option which is easily obtained and disposed. They are easy to move around and can provide a very, very temporary solution to localised areas of work. An ever present danger from absorbing liquids that can potentially damage floor substrates. When longer term protection is required, this solution will fail miserably.

Ramboards

Using Ramboards to protect your floors is a popular form of protection. Generally a better option from the 3 previously mentioned ones. However, the need to secure them firmly down is crucial. Sticky tapes are used to hold and bind them which in turn can cause permanent stains when their glue absorbs into the protected substrate. They are to an extent water resistance but will eventually allow liquids to permeate thus making contact with the floor surfaces. Often enough, if they are not firmly placed, sand and grit can get trapped underneath causing heavy scratches especially on softer floor surfaces.
